West Highland White Terriers

West Highland Terriers (otherwise known as a Westie or Poltalloch Terrier) possess the classic terrier temperament, they are active, alert, game and full of self importance. They are not a dog that needs pampering, this hard breed enjoys scampering about in all types of weather.

Westies are extremely faithful but do have a stubborn streak and therefore early training is essential. The Westie is not an aggressive dog but, being a terrier, will always be prepared to stand its ground.

Westie's will live happily with other household pets provided that they are introduced to the other pets at an early age.

Background

In the early years of the 19th century, Col Martin of Poltalloch shot one of his favourite brown terriers and began to keep the lightest colour in the litter. These terriers were used to control vermin including foxes and hares. They became known as the West Highland White Terrier in the 20th century.

Average Life Span

Westie's generally live to an average age of between 12 and 15 years of age, however, older dogs are not unusual.

Average Height and Weight

Height at shoulders is approximately 28 centimetres for both males and females. Average weight is around 9 to 10 kilograms, with males tending to be slightly heavier.

Care Requirements

This is a no wash and wear dog. Show dogs are trimmed by hand, plucking the coat with finger and thumb. Westie's as pets need to be trimmed by a groomer at regular intervals (usually every 3-4 months) to keep their dog looking presentable. Owners must keep up the combing and brushing preferably daily between visits. This brushing removes any dead hair and helps the coat to keep clean.

Ideal Owners

The Westie makes an ideal family pet as they are a people loving dog and a great lover of human company.

The Westie has built in sense of fun and adventure and enjoys exercise, whether it be a long country hike or a short walk around the block.

Westie's are good with children and an ideal companion for any individual or the family as a whole and is suited to either town or country living.
